2015, a key year for development!

@EYD2015 - RNI and FM Sebastian Kurz

Under the motto, “Our world, Our dignity, Our future,” the European Union has dedicated this year to development cooperation and aid. In Austria, the European Year of Development 2015 (EYD2015) was officially launched yesterday and RED NOSES International was there.

The kick-off event in Austria was organised by the Austrian Development Agency, an official partner of the EYD2015, and had as special guests the Austrian Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Kurz, and the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica.

During the event, hundreds of students had the opportunity to learn more about development cooperation in several interactive stations from the Austrian Development Agency, SOS Children's Villages, Caritas, the Austrian Red Cross, RED NOSES International and other organisations working in development. Following the launching event, Commissioner Mimica met these organisations, which play an important role in development cooperation in Austria and are part of the Austrian EYD2015 Steering group.

“The aim of the European Year of Development is to inform EU citizens about development cooperation by presenting the successes and best practices that the EU has achieved in collaboration with its Member States," said Commissioner Mimica. In fact, the focus on development cooperation and the aim of actively engaging EU citizens is especially important this year, as 2015 is the last year to achieve the Millennium Development Goals set in 2000 and the year in which the international community must agree on a post-2015 development framework.

As a member of the EYD2015 Austrian Steering group, RED NOSES International's goal is to highlight the importance and explore the role of culture in development. Culture not only plays a central role in the development and empowerment of the individual, it also fosters a more inclusive, democratic and pluralistic society. Furthermore, it is a motor for social and economic development. In addition, with our participation we seek to call for the importance of providing psychosocial support to populations in crisis areas because the psychological burden of conflicts, natural disaster, dislocation, etc., cannot be forsaken.

Together, let us strive for a better world, because this is “our world, our dignity, our future”.
